The Get Ahead Partnership organised the first Do Yourself Proud ‘Girls Games Day’ event at the Pods Leisure Centre on Thursday 22nd November 2018. The event was attended by thirteen primary and junior schools from North Lincolnshire, with nearly 230 children from across Key Stage 2 taking part. The event was aimed at female children who were less active or less confident, who have not represented their school before.

The event ‘Girls Games Day` was the first of its kind in the North Lincolnshire region. This was delivered by the Get Ahead team, leaders from North Lindsey College and Scunthorpe Boxing Club. Throughout the day a variety of different games were experienced by all the children, these included; Badminton, Get Ahead Personal Best Challenges, Dodgeball, Benchball, Basketball and Boxing. This enabled each school to select children who again have not represented their school before but also give the girls a taste of some activities they might have never participated in.

Having the support from Scunthorpe Boxing Club during the event was fantastic and the girls really liked the session, hopefully it builds that club link and it would be fantastic for some of the girls to now attend the boxing club in their own time. During the activities children represented their schools and showed great determination, honesty, self-belief and enthusiasm.

Post event, the smiles on children’s faces was excellent and receiving feedback from bothteachers and children has been brilliant! It was a pleasure to have Gemma Richardson, Team England International Boxer come and support the event and hopefully inspire the girls to progress with their future ambitions.
