A HEALTHY ME - ST PETER AND ST PAUL CofE PRIMARY SCHOOL

In November 2017 and January 2018, Get Ahead Partnership came to visit St Peter and St
Paul Church of England Primary School to educate their pupils and staff on healthy lifestyles.

On our first visit, all children from reception to year six managed to successfully identify 44% of ‘Healthy’ and ‘Unhealthy’ food and drinks labels after completing our questionnaire. Each class were then taught how to read, interpret and apply the information provided on food and drinks packages, to help them make healthy informed choices. Each class were then set a challenge to collect as many healthy food and drink labels to put in their very own ‘A Healthy Me’ bin over the next few weeks before Get Ahead Partnership returned for day two. The class who collected the most ‘healthy’ food and drinks labels were set to win a prize.

When Get Ahead Partnership returned for day two of ‘A Healthy Me’ all the children were very excited and keen to see which class had won the challenge. Since learning the food labelling rule of ‘5g of sugar and 3g of fat per 100g’ a huge improvement was evident after repeating the same questionnaire as day one. Children from reception to year six successfully identified 82.4% of ‘Healthy’ and ‘Unhealthy’ food and drinks labels, which showed a whole school improvement of 38.4%.

During day two all the children focussed on a different topic, this time learning about top tips of how to get a good night’s sleep. This involved working in groups to identify from different statements deciding which ones would help and which ones would stop you from getting a good night’s sleep. All the children completed this challenge and showed great enthusiasm to learn new ideas.

Overall it was really good to spend time in the school and see the children learning new
information from both day one and day two. Every class contributed brilliantly to collecting their healthy food and drink labels. Class 3GE won the challenge after collecting a superb 100 Healthy food and drink labels, well done!

We really hope St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary school continue to check their food and drink labels, use our top tips to improve their night’s sleep and ensure they complete their 60 active minutes every day.
